Lee describes the collection as an important record of Black visual self-representation and a means to “reflect the way Black people saw themselves on their terms—without the intention of being seen, or judged, by others.” To Lee, these powerful photographs are an expression of “Black life mattering.”These vivid images chronicle milestones such as weddings, birthdays and graduations, as well as quiet daily moments, offering contemporary views long ignored or erased by mainstream culture. Together, these works highlight the role snapshots have played in Black life, as tools to challenge stereotypical portrayals and as a means to memorialize family, culture and heritage.The design starts on the cover, the images stored in a random way similar to when they’re found in a shoebox; becoming more organized for the viewer while flipping through the book. The Orange County Museum of Art wanted to redesign their brand and website to visually represent the shift that was happening, which was the new building designed by Morphosis. The visual identity, brand materials, and website reference the physical space the museum occupies. Southern California is a complex, multilayered place, connected to its ecological and geographical features – the sky, ocean, trees, and architecture. OCMA’s visual identity and website feature a dynamic design system that reflects the light and space of Southern California. We wanted the website to feel like an extension of the physical space, which takes digital form. The Frye Art Museum’s website is meant to be a gateway into the various things it offers like events, browsing the collection, programs, and rotational exhibitions. The Website The design of the website places the navigation as the forefront to make sure that users can locate themselves throughout the complex site. The colors were inspired by the iridescent gate that is found at the entrance of the museum; showing how time affects material. The typefaces that are part of the brand are Murtaugh and Riggs, designed by Nikola Djurek. The website’s infrastructure allows for a cinematic experience of architectural projects, holding space for panoramic drone videos, and evolving the studio’s visual identity. The flexible, varied web grid is designed to accommodate a wide range of content without any feeling of repetition, while still allowing for consistent information and simple navigation. Frederick Fisher and Partners is passionate about creating spaces at the intersection of art, education, and community building with a heavy focus on the design process. The show features work from all over the world, including objects from Egypt’s Arab Spring protests. The show guides visitors through visual chants of resistance spanning more than a century of protest graphics. Each section showcases typographic anger and agency as it is seen in the streets, on the printed page, and on the bodies of demonstrators. Featured artists include: Emory Douglas, Favianna Rodriguez, Jenny Holzer, W.E.B Dubois, ACT UP, Ganzeer, Amos Kennedy, Jr., Corita Kent, and more. Strikethrough is also available as an online exhibition for the global community to explore in solidarity, which was designed by chris hamamoto, Jon Sueda, and Minkyoung Kim. My role in this project as a lead designer was to create and design the exhibition space in 3D to conceptualize the flow of people, manage the placement of protest signs, and design the tombstone captions. The choice of the angled wall was to create a call and response to the protest signs that were hanging. At Kerning Cultures, they tell the kinds of stories in which people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region can actually see themselves. Because we love stories – really good stories, and there are so many from our region just waiting to be told. As the UX/UI designer for this project, I redesigned the Kerning Cultures multi-language website (in Arabic and English) to reflect their brand and identity. Du Bois at the 1900 World’s Fair Deconstructing Power: W. E. B. Du Bois at the 1900 World’s Fair places pieces from decorative arts in juxtaposition with 20 data visualizations designed by W. E. B. Du Bois. The data visualizations highlight the success of Black Americans, despite the racism they were facing. The design of the exhibition references the linearity of the hand written typeface found in Du Bois’s visualizations. The placement of the objects across the exhibition create a dialogue within each other; showcasing the vast differences in objected goods vs. the documentation of historical moments and Black life in America. With the help of a substantial grant from FEMA, BHIS, Phoenix House California, and UC Irvine, in collaboration with Polymode, we developed an entire suite of deliverables to assist youth (K-12) in understanding, mitigating, and processing the Covid-19 pandemic. As the design lead, I helped build the you and brand, identity, and app using design research that was provided by therapists, social workers, and visual prototypes. The app is meant to serve kids K–12 students in Orange County, CA.Harnessing scientific research, data, and user focus groups, the brand identity came about in the realm of cell division and a notion of processing the simple to the complex. Color is also anchored firmly to scientific study and representation, which translates into the different levels. These levels appear in the app and website through 6 videos covering a range of topics. The digital materials pair with a printed workbook distributed by the school system and connect to the community with a social media strategy and an out-of-home campaign across Orange county.
