Kerning Cultures
Kerning Cultures is an immersive podcast for curious listeners. Founded in 2015, Kerning Cultures Network is the first venture-funded podcast company in the Middle East. They also happen to be female-led. Featuring a line up of award-winning immersive Arabic and English podcasts for all types of listeners.
At Kerning Cultures, they tell the kinds of stories in which people in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region can actually see themselves. Because we love stories – really good stories, and there are so many from our region just waiting to be told.
As the UX/UI designer for this project, I redesigned the Kerning Cultures multi-language website (in Arabic and English) to reflect their brand and identity. Using design research methods and UX/UI principles to guide the design of a bilingual experience, I created lo-fi and hi-fi prototypes, worked alongside a team of developers to implement the new design, and collaborated with stakeholders.

The Process
Lo-fi prototypes were designed at the early stages, in both Arabic and English to ensure a seamless interaction regardless of language. After the initial prototypes, the grid was developed with the right and left alignment as main guides and holding points for Arabic and English accordingly.
The Design
The design was led with the question “How can the design of the website support, uplift, and spotlight bilingual stories from the MENA region?”. The driving force was really centering language in a way that feels intuitive, accessible, and bold. The underlying 10 column grid allows for variation with the layouts to flex depending on the content of each page.
